After 3 weeks of “Hands On The Job,” the walls are standing, with 2 central pillars in place, and now we await for an answer about the timber to build the structure where the roof will stand.

Last Sunday I was with the congregation and noticed that there was a distinct change in the number of youths who appeared. And children, many more children.

We know it’s not the building that makes the church, the church is us, but I have no doubts it helps to have a decent space. The service was still in the wooden shack but next door one can already see that thank God something better is about to happen. While the voices raised in songs of praise to God, the nearby drums of the “sangoma” (witch doctors) faded.

So far, according to the plan of building [in the rough] half (100m2) of the approved area, it was used;

– 1.450 cement blocks (bricks)
– 28 bags of cement
– 4,5m3 of sand
– 12 rolls of reinforcing wire for the concrete
– 1,5 rolls of dampcourse
– 2 concrete lintels of 1,8m
– Two pipes for the central pillars

The material had a cost of R9,560.50 plus R1,560.00 representing 90 hours paid to Orlando. The remaining staff worked as volunteers. In addition to these expenses totaling R11,120.50, there were those related to the vehicle used (petrol and maintenance) in the amount of R6,323.03 and representation (photocopying, telephone and equipment) in the amount of R3,620.42, a total of R9,943.45; Expenses which are included in the R20,000,00 (€2.000,00) implicitly mentioned in the news letter NL09.2012.

The vehicle, the Nissan 2.4 4×4, purchased in January 2009 when fuel was R10.6 a litre, for the sake of achieving the proposed targets had to be sold, with regret because it was always a faithful means of transportation and cargo. Now we are looking for something more economical which won’t be so heavy with the present R12.6 per litre (and mounting) fuel price.

While going on a hunt for a Nissan 1.4, we wait our friend BR’s reply on the timber donation so the work can continue.

CARTA DE NOTÍCIAS 01/2013

Depois de preparativos que já se faziam longos, graças a Deus a construção da KLW*CC começou no passado dia 2013.01.29.

Havíamos noticiado anteriormente que, de-vido ao insuficiente apoio financeiro, era necessário dividir a obra em fases. Depois de reuniões com a comissão fabriqueira e pesquisas externas chegou-se à conclusão de que o ideal e tentativamente possível seria construir meta-de da área, 100m2, de forma a que haja acesso a um espaço coberto até que, se Deus quiser, em Outubro próximo quando regressar de Portugal, traga pelo menos o suficiente para o resto, sem contar com os acabamentos.

O que temos agora dará para construir apenas as paredes, vigamentos (ainda dependente da prometida doação das madeiras) e o telhado. No final, se ainda houver disponibilidade financeira, terminar-se-á de cimentar alguns bocados de chão que ainda estão por fazer, junto ao que será o púlpito/palco. Em princípio, esta fase não incluirá rebocos nem outros acabamentos, tais como instalação das portas, janelas, instalação eléctrica, etc. Esta obra, de cerca de €10.000,00 (orçamento dos materiais há um ano atrás) pode ser tão complicada de levar avante como outras de maior vulto. Daí concluo que não será o custo o factor principal que determina o sucesso mas sim a motivação que os vários actores trazem consigo.

A iniciativa “De Barraco a Tijolos” (Em Inglês; “From Shack to Bricks”) nasceu finais de Janeiro de 2012, um ano atrás. Finalmente conseguimos dar início prático à idea. Fiéis ao hábito de transparência, que nos tem granjeado a confiança de quem nos apoia, os amigos que tornam possível este trabalho missionário/humanitário, continuaremos a fornecer relatórios escritos, em suporte fotográfico e audio-visual do progresso da obra, se bem como os detalhes interessantes que podem ir além da mecânica do trabalho braçal e tocar o social. A interacção entre as pessoas, o que se ganha em riqueza afectiva de grupo, visto que esta não é apenas uma iniciativa para construir algo físico, mas principalmente dar continuidade à construção de uma igreja de corações unidos a Cristo, preparados, motivados e decididos a ganhar outros corações para Ele! Mãos à obra!

NEWS LETTER 01/2013

After preparations which seemed endless thank God the construction of KLW*CC started on the 2013.01.29.

We had previously reported that, due to insufficient financial support, the work would have to be divided in stages. After meeting with the building committee and external surveys the conclusion was the ideal would be to tentatively build half the area, 100m2, so there would be a covered space until, God willing, next October when returning from Portugal with at least the necessary funds for the remaining half.

The funds we have now will just build the walls, set the wooden structure for the roof (still dependent on the promised donation of timber) and the roof itself. Eventually, if there are still funds available, we’ll finish cementing parts of the floor which are not done yet by what will be the pulpit/stage. This time we don’t think we can include plastering or other finishing such as doors, window frames and the windows themselves, electricity, etc.

It is interesting to see how a construction of about R100,000.00/€10,000.00 (the cost of materials about a year ago) can be so complicated to carry through as other larger-scale projects. I conclude that the cost is not the main factor that determines success but the motivation that is brought in by the various participants.

“From Shack to Bricks” (De Barraco a Tijolo in Portuguese) was born in late January 2012, a year ago. Finally we managed to put the idea into practice.

Following the habit of transparency, which has earned the trust of those who support us; Friends who make this missionary/humanitarian work possible, we will continue to give written, photographic and audio-visual account of the progress, and interesting details that may go beyond the mechanics of the work and touch the social. The interaction between people, what is gained by the synergies created, given that such is not just an initiative to build something physical but more importantly to continue building a church of hearts united with Christ, strong and prepared to win other hearts to Him! Let’s get to work!
